1930-1940 German Silver Sugar Tongs in Original Box

1930-1940 German Silver Sugar Tongs in Original Box

This pair of sugar tongs features a fine Louis XV pattern with a swirling motif and shell-like hands. This pair was crafted in Germany between 1930 and 1940 according to the pattern and the silver marks. These tongs are stamped with a banded tri-point crown followed by “90M”:

The tri-point crown was stamped on all silver and silver-plated goods produced in Germany (versus the English counterpart of a stamped Lion). The “90” indicates the following distinctly German and French making process: The silversmith would coat a batch of 12 pieces of silverware in a silver coating to plate them. Per 12 items, he would use 90 grams of fine silver to bathe the batch. Thus, each piece in the batch would be marked with a “90”. The “M” in the interior marking sequence is possibly the maker’s mark for the Berlin-based silversmith, Fritz Memmert, who produced work only from 1900-1940.
