1897 German 14k Gold and Hand Painted Divided Condiment Dish

1897 German 14k Gold and Hand Painted Divided Condiment Dish

This lovely serving dish was manufactured in Germany during the late Victorian period, as impressed with a ‘97’ on its base beside its maker’s mark. It has all the hallmarks of German Victorian ceramics, including its romantic, asymmetrical form, its hand painted floral details, and its iridescent glazing that accentuates the piece. This kind of dish, with two components divided by a central handle, classifies it as a condiment dish.

When this item was new about 120 years ago, it was customary to put cold salads and relishes in these kinds of serving containers atop a dining room spread, the handle offering convenient passing accommodations. Today, this piece may be used for the same purpose, perhaps with dips and sauces. Perfect also as a nut bowl for your in-home bar, as a makeup caddy or jewelry dish for your vanity, or as a magnificent catchall for your entryway console, this porcelain beauty suits all your modern needs.
