1880s German 14k Gold Porcelain Toothpick Holder

1880s German 14k Gold Porcelain Toothpick Holder

Petite in size, this gilded ceramic vessel is in every way enchanting. The body is made of bone china, the finest of porcelains that contains a percentage of cow bone ash which gives the piece its warm luminescence. The form gives the illusion of twisting, with a scalloped rim that compliments the floral forms that rise from the profile of the piece.

This small vase would have been used as a toothpick holder as a part of a sprawling dining and serving set, and would have been placed atop the dining table during dinner parties.

A nearly invisible and non-threatening hairline crack, and the 14k gold hand-painted accents both bear the trademarks of ample use, as it was likely passed innumerable times during a number of gatherings. What remains is a beautiful dichotomy of radiant genuine gold and the kiss of time. Use as intended on your bartop or dining table, place on your vanity to hold treasured jewels and bobby pins alike, or use as a dainty bud vase to hold your favorite blooms.
