Early 1930s Niloak Pottery Fluted Bud Vase in Ozark Dawn Matte Glaze

Early 1930s Niloak Pottery Fluted Bud Vase in Ozark Dawn Matte Glaze

The mold for this ceramic vase was likely produced in the late 1920s through the early 1930s, at the beginning of the Art Deco movement. The glazing and shape harken to the Prairie Style of the Arts and Crafts taste that saw overlap with the Deco years in decorative arts history of the United States. Yet, the form of this piece is sensuous and also geometric, finding the balance between the smooth curves and aesthetically pleasing dimensions and proportions. True to the iconic Niloak 1930s style, this vessel boasts a matte glaze, which was en vogue for American fine art pottery at the time. All Niloak pottery was hand dipped by an individual artist, so each piece’s coloring is subtly unique, notable for its inconsistencies and ‘the human touch’. Its stunning cool pinkish coloring is offset by a complimentary turquoise color at the fluted rim, a glazing technique popular at the time, but the coloring of which was trademarked by the Niloak Pottery Company. This particular color combination was dubbed ‘Ozark Dawn’, and is unique to the Arkansas-based ceramic manufactory.

Its base is marked with the Niloak raised trademark, the vase’s mold causing the letters to be quite rounded and less crisp than later, more perfected, molds. This vase was produced in Benton, Arkansas, where the company was based until it went bankrupt after nearly half a century in business.
