1949 Van Briggle Mulberry Glaze Ceramic Ashtray Dish

1949 Van Briggle Mulberry Glaze Ceramic Ashtray Dish

Made by the world famous Van Briggle company in 1949, this lovely little dish is ceramic and hand glazed. This item was made as an intended ashtray, a stylish take on a functional object that everyone had in their homes at the time. True to the iconic Van Briggle aesthetic, this piece features a perfect combination of pleasing geometry and usability. The vessel boasts a matte glaze, which was en vogue for American fine art pottery at the time. All Van Briggle pottery was hand-painted by an individual artist, so each piece’s coloring is subtly unique. The stunning maroon and cobalt-to-navy glazing was a Van Briggle specialty and was known as the company’s ‘Mulberry’ glaze. For a bit more about the history of Van Briggle pottery, click here.

Its base is marked with the Van Briggle signature trademark of a boxed double-A and below it “Van Briggle”. As marked, this piece was produced in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the company was based, and was manufactured in 1949, which is also marked.

While this item may be used as intended, you may also find that the ashtray form is very useful for any number of purposes. Dress up your vanity top with this colorful piece, and use as a jewelry holder, a larger ring dish, or a makeup tray. Place on your entryway console for a beautiful catchall for keys, receipts, and other small trinkets. Add to your dining table’s centerpiece for a punch of color and uniqueness, use as a serving dish for your gatherings, to hold nuts or candies, and more.
