1903 Early Van Briggle Art Nouveau Iris Vase

1903 Early Van Briggle Art Nouveau Iris Vase

The mold for this particular pattern was first designed by the company’s founder, Artus Van Briggle, in 1903. It is one of the first vases ever produced by the Van Briggle Pottery Company and is pattern #167 in the company’s catalog. It is one of only a handful in existence, and thus is very rare and valuable. It is possible that Van Briggle himself had a direct hand in this piece’s production. This vase has been seen and appraised by Dr. Lori, a renowned celebrity appraiser and tv personality who has been featured on the History Channel’s The Curse of Oak Island.

True to the iconic Van Briggle aesthetic, this vase features a perfect combination of pleasing geometry and organic florals. The vessel boasts a matte glaze, which was en vogue for American fine art pottery at the time. All Van Briggle pottery was hand-painted by an individual artist, so each piece’s coloring is subtly unique. The stunning turquoise and blue glazing was a Van Briggle specialty and was known as the company’s ‘Ming’ glaze.

Its base is marked with the Van Briggle signature trademark of a boxed double-A as well as its country of manufacture, “USA”. This vase was produced in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the company was based.
