100.00

This tile is originally from Plate V of the 1881 company catalog, and is labeled by J. & J.G. Low as design #423 of that plate. The catalog also lists this tile as having an original price tag of  30¢. It may also be seen in the 1887 catalog as design #423 from Plate XI. The catalog lists this exact tile as being designed after Alhambra, a palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institutions are proud owners of several tile collections manufactured by J. & J.G. Low

This decorative tile is square in shape, featuring a glossy olive-green glaze that accentuates its Arabian star motif. Its pattern boasts an eight-pointed center star that radiates line-work from its center, outward, so that other like tiles may be arranged to continue the same pattern when applied alongside this one. The rear of the tile reads “J. & J.G. LOW PATENT ART TILE WORKS, CHELSEA, MASS. U.S.A. COPYRIGHT 1881 BY J & JG LOW”.
