Rare c. 1910 Hexagonal Glass Pepto-Mangan Bottle by Gude of New York City

Rare c. 1910 Hexagonal Glass Pepto-Mangan Bottle by Gude of New York City

This hexagonal bottle was used by a company called Gude that specialized in medicines and tonics. This bottle was specifically used for packaging ‘pepto-mangan’ which was said to “…provide a direct supply of minerals; to help build hemoglobin in the blood and stimulate the appetite so that more iron is absorbed from food.” The bottle is, in fact, embossed with “PEPTO-MANGAN (GUDE)” to indicate the product type. The hexagonal shape became iconic and recognizable for Gude. The ‘pepto-mangan’ itself was likely made by the pharmaceutical brand, by M. J. Breitenbach Company, and had 16% alcohol as an active ingredient, as well as peptonates of iron and manganese. It was intended to be a tonic for the blood and liver, and to help with nausea and indigestion.

The aqua-tint is a result of the low amount of iron impurities found in the sand used combined with the absence of decolorizing agents during production and a low flame for less oxygen. The tint means that the bottle was probably utilitarian in purpose and, like other aqua-tinted bottles, was likely made between 1850-1925.

Note that a later version (c. 1930) of this bottle may be found at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
