c. 1860 German Mineral Water Stoneware Jug

c. 1860 German Mineral Water Stoneware Jug

38.00

Glazed in an iridescent coppery brown, and bearing the evidence of time, this jug is of German origin and once held mineral water. Stoneware was used throughout the 19th century to store mineral water because of its low cost of production, and because stoneware shielded its contents from the sun and, thus, kept them cooler than their glass bottle counterparts. This piece has a single handle, classifying it as a jug.

Its mouth opening has rings, which are the result of its production process, and would have originally been fitted with a cork. Its stamped inscription states that it held spring water from the Taunus Mountains in Hesse, which is north of Frankfurt. The manufacturer was, itself, headquartered in Frankfurt.

There are marks throughout the body that are consistent with use, wear, and age, and the base has a chip, as pictured. The body also has inclusions which show as textured dips and raised dots where glaze has gathered, all natural to the manufacturing of utilitarian stoneware. Because this type of pottery was manufactured for pragmatic use rather than as art pottery, these kinds of bottles are rare to find intact and are highly collectible.

Display with your collection of antique stoneware as a fine German example, use as a conversation piece in your assortment of objects of interest, or enhance with a bloom of your choosing to use as a rustic bud vase.
