West African Tooled Leather Regué Batte Smoking Bags

West African Tooled Leather Regué Batte Smoking Bags

This set of three bags are traditional to the Ḥarāṭīn people who live a nomadic lifestyle in the Sahara Desert, seeking refuge in the desert’s oases. A set of three bags is rare, especially a set that has coordinating colors and distinct designs and sizes. Each of these would have once been home to a smoking pipe in one of its multiple sleeves, a tool to press tobacco into the pipe in another, and tobacco for smoking in a third. Though rarely used in contemporary Mauritania, each piece is a little works of art unto itself.
