1880s Amber Glass Pharmaceutical Bottle from Detroit, Michigan

1880s Amber Glass Pharmaceutical Bottle from Detroit, Michigan

Formed Detroit, Michigan in 1866 and incorporated in 1875, Parke, Davis & Co. was once the world's largest pharmaceutical company. It is credited with creating the first pharmaceutical laboratory considered modern, and developed the first systematic procedures for clinical trials of new medications. The company was acquired out by Warner-Lambert in 1970, which was later bought out in 2000 by Pfizer.

This amber bottle dates to approximately the early 1880s, when the company was still quite young. It retains bits of its original label, on which the company name and location are clearly legible. The script used is scrolling, and heavy, which was en vogue before the turn of the century, after which simpler sans serif fonts became more popular for printing. The base is marked “PD&CO 12” indicating the manufacturer and volume capacity. Its original cork stopper is contained within the bottle.
