1860s Gilt Leather Wooden Box with Brass Hardware

1860s Gilt Leather Wooden Box with Brass Hardware

Handcrafted from wood and wrapped in a gold-embossed leather, this little trinket box was once used to hold pens, pencils, stamps, and paper name cards by a successful Mississippi lawyer from the wealthy Ballentine family. It dates to between the 1860s and 1870s, and bears the charming effects of use and time. The box is well made, and functions on a brass hinge, and stays securely closed when shut.

The gilt design that bands the perimeter of the box may be described as a a row of upward facing acanthus leaves upon a double stripe, with a row of target-like rings connected by a single line. The lid of the box has a triple striped perimeter with an acorn detail within each of the four corners, and an innermost linked pattern of almond and circle shapes. The center of the leather covered lid boasts a similar acanthus design with fleur-de-lis like shapes sweeping in symmetrical placement around a central orb of linework, which is now no longer but assumed through the embossing ghost marks.

Stow away your most precious treasures, display with your other objects of interest, use as a fascinating take on an entryway catchall, or employ as a storage box when needed. This piece can enhance any collection, shelf, or wedding reception centerpiece.
